    Individual Drumset Instruction:  The curriculum provides students a system for learning jazz and contemporary drumset styles, accessories, and hand percussion techniques used in drumming from Africa, Brazil, Cuba, and the Middle East. Teach percussion students both the history and theory of music and drumset.

    Percussion Ensemble:  Expose students to works written for percussion ensemble by American, Asian, African, Brazilian, Latin American, and European composers. Expose students to traditional drumming styles from Africa, Cuba, Brazil, Middle East, India, and America. Perform high-energy original pieces with SMW Dance Team at varsity boys and girls basketball halftime. Perform at State Small Ensemble competition.

    Individual Percussion Instruction:  The curriculum provides students a system for learning snare drum, drumset, mallets, timpani, orchestral accessories, and hand percussion techniques used in drumming from Africa, Brazil, Cuba, and the Middle East. Teach percussion students both the history and theory of music and percussion. Performing ensembles, soloists, and clinicians are brought into the school to expose students to the world of total percussion.

    Master Class:  Conduct master classes for students on performance aspects of music as well as proper rehearsal techniques and instrument maintenance.

    Marching Percussion:  Coordinate and arrange for the marching percussion section. Directly involved with students during rehearsals and sectionals.

    Concert Percussion:  Directly involved with students during ensemble rehearsals helping instill proper ensemble performance qualities.

    Music Director and Composer

    Performances:  The East Mountain High School Rhythm Ensemble and World Percussion Ensemble perform many times throughout the school year presenting interactive shows that blend high energy drumming with projected live media manipulation and live visual art. The shows are greatly influenced by Stomp, Blue Man Group, contemporary percussion literature and world drumming styles with a focus on involving their audience and spreading cultural awareness. Pieces blend traditional and non-traditional drumming practices with new compositions written for each performance by the director.

    Rhythm Ensemble:  Rhythm is an introductory course for students to learn music from around the world focusing on percussion and cultural awareness and music history. Proper technique on a variety of instruments and beginning music theory provide the framework for learning different song styles for performance. The instruments used in Rhythm ensemble include but are not limited to: marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, glockenspiel, snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, drum set, djembe, djuns, ashiko, gankangoui bells, shekere, tar , surdo, repinique, caixa, agogo, tamborim, reco reco, cuica, samba whistle, pandiero, Cuban congas, bongo, cowbell, timbales, palitos, clave, bomba, dumbek, riq, electric bass, turntables, loops, sampler, laptop, trash cans, buckets, body percussion and various found sounds. The Rhythm Ensemble performs throughout the year.

    World Percussion Ensemble:  The world percussion ensemble is an advanced performance group open by audition to all students enrolled at East Mountain High School. One semester of Rhythm is a required prerequisite. The World Percussion Ensemble explores music of Africa, Brazil, Mexico, Middle East, Latin America, Japan and contemporary percussion ensemble literature. Music theory and notation are an integral part of the curriculum. The WPE performs many times throughout the year and travels. They have performed at the Percussive Arts Society New Mexico Day of Percussion 2004, 2005 and many.

    Guitar Class:  Guitar is a performance-based class. Students study music theory, musical forms and analysis, performance practices and ensemble performance techniques. In-class performances deepen understanding of these principles as well as group and individual projects. We will cover scales, chords, reading, improvising, composition, ear training and music history.

    Jazz Ensemble:  Jazz ensemble is open to all students and is by audition. They perform contemporary and standard jazz as well as rock and funk.
